Arrrgh! I know! Everybody's gonna yell at me that Sesshomaru is out of character here! Don't yell--let me explain!
Does anybody know what Sesshomaru was like before? We haven't a clue in the series except what Inuyasha knows. All Inuyasha knows is that Sesshomaru treated him "like dirt." He doesn't even know what Sesshomaru might have been like before he was born.
Well, in The White Dog I'm going to attempt to dig into some history here, and all I can do is what I can imagine, since there's not a lot of clues in the manga. I take what I see in the characters now, and try to build together what made them that way. And I don't think Sesshomaru is evil. (This is for all you Fluffy fans out there.)
Sure, he's cold, selfish, and (to be blunt) seems very spoiled (in a grown-up kind of way). But he's not evil. Naraku is evil. Sesshomaru's just bad. And I'd imagine he's had a tough life too--not like Inuyasha, but still probably unpleasant. And he can't be all bad, either; something about his face is too sweet for that (and I am not one to say, "Oh, he's too cute to be a bad guy!"). He lacks the darkness that Naraku has. And look at how he cares for little Rin. Yes, he's a demon and he does a lot of cold wrongdoing, but there's a heart in there somewhere--and I'll bet it's just like his father's.
But just read my story--and maybe further explanations in The White Dog will help too. If you still don't like my version of younger Sesshomaru even after reading "Birth of a Son," just wait until he and Inuyasha meet again in future chapters of "The White Dog."
(I can keep revising/improving this short story. And I can add to it, if Inuyasha's history according to The White Dog interests anyone. Feel free to let me know.)
